St. Lucia's Most Romantic Resort Has a Secret: It's Also Great for Families

My first evening at Sugar Beach in St. Lucia, I met a group for cocktails before dinner at Bonté Bar. As I sat down to watch the sunset between the Pitons, I looked over and saw a family with two young kids a few feet away — the parents deep in conversation over cocktails, watching the same sunset, while their kids played in the sand nearby. As an advisor who has young kids myself and books a lot of families with young kids, I remember thinking: that looks so nice, for everyone. The parents actually looked relaxed. The kids looked like they were having the time of their lives. That was just the beginning of what changed my mind about Sugar Beach, a resort I'd always filed away as a honeymoon, anniversary, special-occasion, couples-only destination. Sugar Beach isn't secretly family friendly. It's deliberately built to work for both — and most people don't know it.

One of the things that makes Sugar Beach so romantic is how much space it gives you. The private villas make you feel like you've really escaped everyone else — which is exactly what also makes them great for families. You don't have to worry about connecting walls when your kids are being too loud, and you have your own private plunge pool, so you don't have to worry about splashing the honeymooners next door. There are two-bedroom villas, and one-bedrooms with roomy pull-out couches, so there's space for everyone. Some even have two bathrooms, which buys your family a little more breathing room too.

The dining is just as thoughtful. I always find myself scanning a menu wondering what my kids would actually eat, and at Sugar Beach that's never a problem. There's a great breakfast buffet with pancakes, waffles, and bacon; a beachside burger spot called Jetty Burger that's perfect for a quick, delicious family lunch; and in-room dining for the nights when the kids — or the parents — are just too tired to make it to a table.

Then there's the sheer volume of things to do. There's a dock on property where you can book boat excursions, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more. The beach itself is beautifully swimmable, with a water trampoline, floating rings, and comfortable beach chairs for the adults keeping watch. Just off property, there's ziplining and waterfall hikes. And if you ask me, the thing kids will remember most is the chocolate-making experience at the resort's own Cocoa Mill.

I can't leave out the kids' club, either — a lot of resorts phone this in, but Sugar Beach is not one of them. It's staffed by genuinely energetic people who run activities kids actually remember, the kind that make them beg to come back.

This is a resort that works for just about anyone. A milestone anniversary trip? Absolutely. A 50th birthday couples' getaway? It'd be perfect. A family vacation or multigenerational trip? A hundred percent. If you want a romantic getaway with your partner and you want your kids to have the time of their lives, it honestly doesn't get much better than Sugar Beach.
